General Information
Community Service Committees Description
There are five Community Service Committees within our Club.  Each committee is charged with responsibility to improve the Communities we live in.  A brief description of their duties is:

Business & Professions is to assist in providing and maintaining economic stability and growth in production, commerce, and services in the community.  Areas of consideration should include:  agriculture, trade, industry, services, professions.

Citizenship & Patriotism is to foster love of our country and pride in being a citizen by promoting activities and philosophies which  enable each of us to become more aware of our unique rights and responsibilities which are ours because we are Americans.  Areas for consideration should include:  community pride, holiday observation, voter registration, Armed Forces Veterans Day, community flag display.

Environment is to improve the environment and conserve natural resources in the community.  Areas for consideration are land, water, and air pollution; community beautification; conservation of wildlife; soil and water conservation; rodent and pest control.

Public Service - many services that are required by our citizens must be provided by governmental, corporate, and volunteer agencies.  This committee should be aware of all public services available in the community, be concerned with their efficient operation and justified expansion, and work toward the establishment of additional services.  Areas for consideration are water, electrical, gas supply, buildings, transportation facilities, waste disposal, law enforcement, fire and rescue squads, telephone, TV, and cable.

Social Development- because human resources are its most valuable asset, it is important that the community have facilities and services which will provide for the well being and development of all people, with special concern for those with unusual needs.  Since the Ruritan Club serves the entire community, it is in the unique position to take the initiative in making these facilities and services available through club projects and cooperative programs with other organizations and agencies.  Areas of consideration should include youth, the disabled, human development, health, senior citizens, and drug abuse prevention.

Fundraisers
In order for our Club to have the funds available to support our many community service activities, we hold several fundraisers each year.

Pork Chop Dinner - in early Spring our Club begins selling tickets for our Pork Chop Dinner.  Usually about 800 tickets are sold and the Club members work to cook the pork chops and get plates ready for pick up.  Pick ups begin at 4 p.m. and ends around 6 p.m.  A fun time with lots of hard work for all members who help.

The first Saturday is reserved for Pancake-Sausage Breakfasts at the Club House.  The doors open at 7 a.m. and we offer eat in all you can eat or take out plates until 10 a.m.

Scholarship Program
Our Club is unique in how we award our annual scholarships.  The members wanted our youth to be aware of what Ruritan is all about.  So in 2004 we began a point system for the youth of our community to be eligible for a scholarship.

An Applicant is required to be a member of the Club in the prior calendar year and earn at least 10 points by:  a) attending meetings of the Club - minimum of six points with one point awarded for each meeting attended; and b) participate in projects and fundraisers of the Club - minimum of four points at one point per event.  Points must be completed by March of the senior year of the applicant.

Our policy is to give scholarships to all student members who collect their ten points.

We also allow students to continue as members after graduation from high school for four years of college as long as they remain active in the Club.
